I am currently looking at migrating from version 2.2 to 2.4. From what I can see, remote searching is no longer available without setting up harvesting. Is this true? Or am I missing something?
"Remote searching" and "harvesting" are separate concepts
in GeoNetwork-speak.
You don't set up the latter to get the former.
"Remote searching" = using Z39.50 to execute a query
on one or more remote servers,
then presenting the results without any further ado.
"Harvesting" = using (e.g.) CSW to collect metadata
records from one or more remote sources,
then storing and indexing them locally
with Lucene. The user can then do searches locally
without reference to the remote site(s).
A GN user can do _either_ a local search (using Lucene
on harvested and locally created data) or
a remote search (using Z39.50). You can not do
both simultaneously and combine the results -- except
if you enable the local Z39.50 server and include it
in your list of "remote" sites to be searched.
If you're currently doing remote searching with 2.2, you're not
doing it with GN out-of-the-box; you must be
using a spin-off such as BlueNet MEST, or you have
rolled your own customizations, _or_ you're
using the backdoor URL (.../main.home?remote=on&intermap=off).
In out-of-the-box 2.4 the backdoor URL to remote searching
has been removed.
But the infrastructure is still there. I can
confirm that if you add in your own user interface
you can make it work. BlueNet MEST is now (more and
less) 2.4-based _and_ has kept its user interface for remote searches.
Um, you really should talk to Simon -- after all, unlike
99% of list members you can make a local phone call to
talk to the expert.
Using Z39.50 for harvesting is not supported
in out-of-the box GN, either 2.2 or 2.4.
Although there is a user interface for configuring such,
there's nothing underneath. The geocat.ch sandbox
has an implementation of Z39.50 harvesting;
I have not tried it.
Remote searches are an essential piece of functionality to me, so if it is no longer possible, it'll be a show stopper on the upgrade.
The only note I can find is in the version 2.4 manual which has 1 line saying:
"5. Z3950 Remote search Not implemented. This is a placeholder."
Oh dear.
