[GeoNetwork-users] Resuscitation advice please: GeoNetwork returns NullPointer Exception on search, login, etc

G'Day all,

Looking for some help/advice for getting our GN service back up and running.

Under normal operating conditions (ie, no development has been going on) the service has gone down.

Null Pointer Exceptions are returned for both an attempt to login and any search.

The front page loads fine, overview map is displayed, and a featured record is displayed.

But there's no way to go further without getting the nullpointer.

We've done multiple tomcat restarts and tomcat reports GN is a running service.

I found the docos explaining that there are log4j assets stored under jetty, but this is already more complex than I can deal with. (eg, where is the jetty directory? do I need a speciall log reader? etc)

What should we be doing next?

Thanks indeed for any assistance.

JB

hi John,

from your description it appears at least your database connection is fine,
but obviously something else is wrong. Could you elaborate what you mean
with "there's no way to go further" ?

If you're running on Tomcat, anything about Jetty doesn't apply. To get
some idea what's wrong please look at the log files, which most probably
would be in <your-tomcat-directory>/logs/catalina.out.

Note that these logs are rolled per day most likely, so it's probably best
to do something on your GN to have the NullPointerException again now, and
then look at the log. If you have any errors in the log (like stacktraces)
please post them here.

Kind regards

Thanks Heikki,

Your second intuition was quite helpful...we're tracking the issue over to Postgresql/PostGIS.

I now have GeoNetwork back up and running (ie, I can login and run searches), and can see that the problem is limited to anything connected to the GeoServer assets being served from PostGIS.

Since I think we're now out of the GeoNetwork scope, I'll close this thread.

Kind regards,

JB
