Hi users and developers,

There are many versions of Geonetwork out there on the web but none seem to
show

the version they are running.

Would be possible to show the version number e.g.

'This geonetwork is running 2.x.x' on the home page.

not encourage the version number on the homepage as the normal user has no
interest in this information.

I can’t see the version number on the ‘About’ page at least up until version 2.8. Haven’t seen any

of the later 2.10.x versions yet, do these 2.10.x show the version running?

I agree that it would be really useful if we (GN implementers) adopted the practice of stating the version being used.
When we do so (in our new instance), we will put that detail in the ABOUT section.

Perhaps Steve was saying that the version details is more typically (in software generally, such as browser software ++) put in that spot?

Certainly the case with GUI based software that Help->About would give you the version number - also on a splashscreen.

The version number can be obtained using the request http://hostname/geonetwork/srv/eng/xml.info?type=site, although I do agree that having the version number on the About page makes a lot of sense.

Hi Aaron,

Thank you that is a very useful command to show the version. Now I can
actually see what versions are running.
Agree that the version would best be displayed on the 'About' page. Perhaps
put it near the 'siteID'
near the bottom of the 'About' page.

I have raised a ticket on github asking for this.

The version number can be obtained using the request
http://hostname/geonetwork/srv/eng/xml.info?type=site, although I do agree
that having the version number on the About page makes a lot of sense.

Certainly the case with GUI based software that Help->About would give you
the version number - also on a splashscreen.

To find the version of geonetwork, check under the about menu, I would not
encourage the version number on the homepage as the normal user has no
interest in this information.

Isn't it generally conventional wisdom to avoid making the software version number readily visible so as to avoid advertising unpatched versions with known security weaknesses to potential hackers?
