Hi all,
I have a question related to metadata for web services.
I use geonetwork and UMN Mapserver to provide web services, and so I use a ".map" file for each WMS. What do you think is the best way to extract metadata from my geonetwork database (Postgresql) in order to fill the tags of the ".map"? How the Fao Geonetwork web services work? When I perform a GetCapabilities request of Fao web services, are metadata taken from the same geonetwork database or from different source?
Thank you,
Bruno.
Hi Bruno,
Until now we have not taken up the task to use the metadata straight out of the GeoNetwork catalog to fill the .map file Metadata elements. We use a .map template with pre-filled metadata and than make sure the .map file has proper references to the metadata stored in GeoNetwork. We create the .map files using ArcMap with a tool called MXD2WMS (used to be MXD2AXL) that you can find on ArcScripts on the ESRI support site. It uses an XSLT that you can customize to produce the default metadata.
It could be nice to have a script that would use GeoNetwork metadata and create the metadata in the .map file automatically as an intermediate step. Ultimately I hope we will arrive at a stage where we generate .map files or GeoServer config files straight out of the metadata + some uploaded SLD files. But this is still the future for now.
Hope this helps, ciao,
Jeroen
