[Geoserver-devel] 1.7.0 new and noteworthy

Hi all,

I am just working on putting together the announcement for 1.7.0 and wanted to get some feedback on the highlights and major features for the 1.7.x series. Here is what I have so far:

  * per layer security
  * raster formats via gdal (ecw,mrsid,etc...)
  * raster symbolizer
  * wfs 1.1 xlink + wcs 1.1
  * kml stuff (geosearch,superoverlays) (might make more sense to announnce for 1.7.1)

Thanks all,

-Justin

* General speedups
* ArcSDE improvements
* ... don't remember if there is anything else, but you can have a look
   at FOSS4G 2008 past present future presentation for extra items

Yeah, hold off on announcing the KML stuff. The other big thing is the new feature model and new catalog. Of course users don't care about that, but you could say something like 'core improvements for GeoServer to grow in the future' or something like that.

Is csv/excel still an extension?

Also what's the state of the docs for the new features? Don't want that to hold up the release, but for 1.7.1 we should be sure it's all well documented.

Afaik it's not even an extension, it's still in unsupported land,
and we don't ship with it at all (http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/Latest).

There are procedures to follow to make that an extension (eat your
own dog food exercise), that is, show that there is enough test
coverage, have a maintainer, and ask the PSC about moving the
module (not sure if there is anything else, but we have a page
somewhere in the wiki).

Did the geosearch work even make it into the release? I missed that meeting apparently.
