I notice the current version of geoapi gs 1.7.x is working against is 2.2-SNAPSHOT. But doing a build on a fresh checkout and recent version of geoapi 2.2.x it does not build. Changing to 2.2-M2 works ok. Is there any reason we are not pegging 1.7.x against geoapi 2.2-M2?

GeoTools 2.5.x is supposed to be pegged against 2.2-M2.
When you say go we were going to release 2.2-M2 as the GeoAPI 2.2.0
release simply to close off this development stream.
So to answer your question - there is no reas to use 2.2-SNAPSHOT.
