Hi,

Bin-zip starts and stops on Windows with Eclipse Adoptium jdk-11.0.17.8-hotspot. I made some simple tests from the UI and did not see anything special. Looks good to me.

We are working to restore the windows installer also - which will need testing due to the change to Java 11 minimum.

Testing and feedback:

geoserver-2.23-RC1-bin

licenses/ NOTICE.html - looks good
license/GEOTOOLS_NOTICE.html - links to licenses that are not included
README.html - looks good correct date and links
resources/log4j.properties - this can be removed
RUNNING.html - change to java 11 only

Confirming it fails to start in Java 8?

Jetty starts, and the logs contain:

2023-03-11 20:45:18.805:WARN:oejw.WebAppContext:main: Failed startup of context o.e.j.w.WebAppContext@anonymised.com{GeoServer,/geoserver,file:///Users/jgarnett/Downloads/geoserver-2.23-RC1-bin/webapps/geoserver/,UNAVAILABLE}{/Users/jgarnett/Downloads/geoserver-2.23-RC1-bin/webapps/geoserver}
java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: org/geoserver/GeoserverInitStartupListener has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 55.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 52.0

Ideally it would not startup, and have a clear message about Java 11. But we can use the above warning in our release notes.

Check for warnings on initial start

We are down to only a few GWC warnings:

11 Mar. 20:48:06 WARN [config.XMLConfiguration] - GWC configuration validation error: cvc-elt.1.a: Cannot find the declaration of element ‘gwcConfiguration’.
11 Mar. 20:48:06 WARN [config.XMLConfiguration] - Will try to use configuration anyway. Please check the order of declared elements against the schema.

Nope, or is an RC so consider this early feedback

That said I do wish to see the windows installer tested for RC, osgeo just got their cert going so we should be able to test before the 18th release.

is their a draft blog post to contribute to?

Actually - the windows installer needed a fix on the geoserver side also.

Can we backport this and re-tag 2.23-RC1 please? With the change to Java 11 it is not the kind of thing I want to see tested for the first time on 2.23.0.

Release candidate is primarily about sorting out build / release kinks after all.

AFAIK Jetty was not upgraded to a Java 11-only version so that is to be expected, the Jetty container starts first and then the webapp is loaded (which fails as expected)

Thanks to Jaun fixing and testing the script (the files had changed from md to html and the installer script had not been updated yet).

One note is that the installer only recognizes oracle JREs; but you can still choose whatever JRE you have installed.

Hi,

I tried the installer with Adoptium 11.0.8 JDK. No issues to report. Uninstalling left the license directory remaining into “Program Files-GeoServer-license” but otherwise the service was stopped and files removed as they should.
