All right, binary zip starts now when I deleted the old GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR environment setting. The problem is that if environment is set to non-existing data directory then:
“Falling back to embedded data directory: C:\ohjelmat\geoserver-2.9-M0\webapps\geoserver\data”
However, zip file does not expand data directory under webapps but into : C:\ohjelmat\geoserver-2.9-M0\data_dir.
After I uninstalled GS 2.8.0 the Windows installer now installs M0 into C:\Program Files (x86)\GeoServer 2.9-M0 if I just accept everything that the installer is suggesting. It does not start though, but ends to Nothing to start:
C:\Program Files (x86)\GeoServer 2.9-M0\bin>call “C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_60\bin\java.exe”
-DGEOSERVER_DATA_DIR=“C:\Program Files (x86)\GeoServer 2.9-M0\data_dir”
-Xmx512m -XX:MaxPermSize=128m -DSTOP.PORT=8079 -DSTOP.KEY=geoserver -Djetty.port=8080
-Djetty.logs=“C:\Program Files (x86)\GeoServer 2.9-M0\logs” -jar “C:\Program Files (x86)\GeoServer 2.9-M0\start.jar”

Hi,
Both Windows installer and binary zip versions fail for me.
The error from Windows installer version is:

The directory “C:\Program Files (x86)\GeoServer 2.8.0” is right, installer puts M0 there with the default settings.
Wondering, did you choose it, or did the program suggest it?
Log from the binary zip trial is in the attachment.
From the log:
“Found System environment variable GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR set to C:\Program Files (x86)\GeoServer 2.8.0\data_dir , but this path does not exist”
Hum… was the installation incomplete, it seems the data dir is not there?
Everything went downhill from there it seems
Cheers
