[Geoserver-devel] A proposal for the home page

Hi,
I was looking at the blog entry about the dev map (nice)
and considering how this could be integrated into the home
page, showing first hand the international nature of the
dev team.

I came up with the following idea (screenshot attached, reduced
to 256 colors to avoid taxing too much your inbox):
- move up the text to allow for more map space
- have a demo map show up first, but with 3 links on top
of it to switch to the dev map, or to a users map

It would also be nice to have some sort of button/link/whatever
taking the user to a full window version of the map (especially
useful for the users map, if a user decides to add himself).

What do you think?
Cheers
Andrea

I like the idea a *lot*.

Question is what do we use for the background map in this case, bluemarble ? Google's stuff is very pretty, but it'd be a little strange to have them serve the background for our front page. Ivan did a good job styling the -users map, maybe that's enough detail ?

Actually the map I've pasted there comes from Sigma:
http://sigma.openplans.org/?zoom=14&lat=37.61537&lon=-77.48141&layers=BT
(at the moment it seems to be down or very very slow...)

Ivan's long term idea to use OSM data is the strongest imho,
it shows an open source server rendering community created data,
if we can pull good styling for it, it's going to be very very good.

Yeah, but the sigma map goes to blue marble if you zoom out, and for those maps it would probably make sense to show the entire world when you first load the page? Agree OSM would be good once you zoom in far enough.

(Looks like sigma was getting hammered, restarted apache to close the connections and everything went back to normal)

I thought I had replied to this thread, but I guess not.

I'm keen on this idea, but concerned about link bar creep (don't know how else to term it). Right now, we have have a few prominent links across the top of the page, a bunch of less-prominent links on the right side, and this would add another horizonal bar of links inside the main page (in the middle). While I agree that making the dev/users page more prominent is beneficial, do you think this may unecessarily clutter the main page? This may be more of a page template redesign issue than a main page content redesign issue, now that I think of it. "Download Now, FREE!" still sticks in my craw a bit.

Well, to put it mildly, if the developers map is not in the front page,
it's not serving its purpose (showing to everybody that GeoServer is
an international effort).
