Me too... thought the comment about the lack of spatial indexes
support leaves me wondering. We should try to tell people nicely
that this is a work in progress, they should not expect it to
work fine with big data sets and the like.

Well I disagree that it has to be 100% ready to add as an extension. Especially since this had been done in my volunteer time and I sort of just want to get something out there, since i know lots of users are waiting for it. I think lots of user interest will help drive improvements such as spatial indexing, etc...
But yes I plan to mark it is a work in progress. I sent an email to the geotools lists and stated this. I plan to do a blog post about this for geoserver and will state the same.

I did not mean to ask that an extension should be picture perfect,
none of the current extensions is. Just that we tell people to
avoid inflated expectations, especially since the benchmarks presentation became quite popular
