Hi Christian,
I would say it is ready to become an extension. Thanks for all your hard work!!
I just approved your pending request for version control access so you can commit now. How to add the extension is documented here:
http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/GSIP+22+-+Community+Modules
But I can summarize:
1) add the module under extensions. You can more or less just mirror one of the other extensions there that is composed of gt libs only, db2, oracle, etc...
2) Add a profile to web.xml to engage the new extension module. The profile should be named the same as the module itself.
3) Add a release artifact descriptor under the release directory. Again mirroring one of the other extension similar in nature.
4) Add an entry for the descriptor to the root pom.xml file. Search for "ext-*" and you should see the pattern.
Then you should be good to go. I am happy to help out adding the module or changing the pom if you would like.

I did the following
1) Signing the contributor agreement and sent it to TOPP (Paper mail, will need some days from Vienna, Austria to New York)
2) I wrote a tutorial in the goeserver user guide using postgis and geoserver 1.7.2
3) I tested with different maps from my customer
Is there anything preventing the module from becoming part of geoserver ?
