Hi all,
I wondering if we could improve the preview further by
adding a small combo allowing to choose the output
format for the tiles showed in the map (showing just
a fixed selection, so that we're sure to include only
the raster format displayable in a browser, that is,
png, png8, gif, jpeg).
Besides allowing to play with various formats, it would
also allow us to make a good impression on users installing
Geoserver on a remotely hosted server, since they could choose
to use the more compressed output formats and have better
response times.
Having another combo to choose a palette would be good too
from that point of view, but maybe we are making it too
complex? One can always add "palette=xxx" in the GetMap
request, the trick is that many people may not notice
they can?
Cheers
Andrea
I think we should be careful about how much stuff we put in the preview. There is already quite a bit of functionality for it. Something like this seems to be more geared toward the expert user. I am not saying i am against it but I think something like the map preview is more usable (especially for novices) when there are less options to play with.

I like your idea a lot Andrea, and for me it fits in to the idea of 'preview', you want to see how things look with your layer, what kind of options will help it. And having palette as an option will raise the visibility of that as well.
Though Justin makes a good point, about overly complicated the interface. I wonder if we could have an 'advanced' tab on the preview page or something? a little javascripty thing that users can click to get a lot more options, but that needn't confuse newbie users?

Hum, I've seen Anthony doing this kind of tabs interface using dojo, but
I'm not sure we want to add it. I'll look around and see if there is
anything we can do without adding an extra library.
Shall I hold the release waiting for this change?
