[Geoserver-devel] Ask to push GeoGig Datastore on GeoServer community

Dear all,
few time ago, as an active contributor of GeoNode, I rised an issue about the GeoGig Datastore plugin dependencies which may break or block the GeoNode releases.

This may happen because the GeoGig plugin is not part of the standard distribution of GeoServer.

Since this plugin is part of the official distribution of GeoNode, and since Boundless is open to share this code even if is not in a stable state, I would like to ask if there is some volunteer from Boundless to refactor the code a bit a make it available as a GeoServer community module.

On my side I will volunteer to provide GeoNode with the necessary changes in order to update the dependencies and be sure everything works fine.

Regards,
Alessio Fabiani.

Thanks Alessio,

We can move the module to geoserver/community - let me sort out who can do so and we will send a seperate email asking for community module shortly.

Please note that the geogig module packages up the geogig datastore, but more importantly adds several configuration screens for managing geogig repositories. When a geogig datastore is published it is actually providing a view of single geogig “branch”, so you may have several datastores configured publishing content from different branches.

I do not think we will need to refactor the code, but the module is quite old and may need to be updated before it is suitable for use with geonode.

Hi Alessio,

I’m keen to move the geogig geoserver plugin as a geoserver community module.

I’ve heard of the inconveniences its inclusion to the default geonode build brought up, and just for the record want to notice that since I first heard of it I was shocked that it was included in the official geonode build. My position, from a technical perspective, was and is that it should have never been like that.

But yeah, since we’re now pushing for a stable geogig release (meaning appropriate project resourcing in place) lets just do that and try to alleviate the pain after the fact.

BTW, I take it we’ll only create the community module on geoserver’s master branch? “appropriate resourcing” is a relative term

Cheers,
Gabriel

Master branch is ok. It would be nice to have also the module on the 2.8.x and 2.7.x since GeoNode 2.4 points to GeoServer 2.7.x right now.

Many thanks Gabriel!

about backporting to geoserver 2.8.x and 2.7.x…
I could easily do so if the geogig module is allowed to be a Java8 project, cause geogig’s dev branch already moved towards it, and this geogig release shall be cut off what we currently have on the dev branch.

So would that be acceptable?

It is a community module so we kind of don’t care :frowning:

I got a question though, the geoserver geogig community module is just integration between geoserver and geogig datastore. Don’t you also need a backport of the geogig datastore that works with an older version of GeoTools?

I got a question though, the geoserver geogig community module is just
integration between geoserver and geogig datastore.

that and the web api to do geogig stuff

Don't you also need a backport of the geogig datastore that works with an
older version of GeoTools?

took care of making sure it worked with several version of geotools in the
past, but I'll see when I get there. Usually it's just a matter of leaving
a couple @Override annotations commented out, but I haven't built it with
GT 15-SNAPTHOT yet.

about backporting to geoserver 2.8.x and 2.7.x...
I could easily do so if the geogig module is allowed to be a Java8
project, cause geogig's dev branch already moved towards it, and this
geogig release shall be cut off what we currently have on the dev branch.

So would that be acceptable?

Hey, just a heads up that I'll be working on getting a geogig release

Keep tuned, looking forward to make geonode's life easier.

Master branch is ok. It would be nice to have also the module on the

Many thanks Gabriel!

Hi Alessio,

I'm keen to move the geogig geoserver plugin as a geoserver community
module.

I've heard of the inconveniences its inclusion to the default geonode
build brought up, and just for the record want to notice that since I first
heard of it I was shocked that it was included in the official geonode
build. My position, from a technical perspective, was and is that it should
have never been like that.

But yeah, since we're now pushing for a stable geogig release
(meaning appropriate project resourcing in place) lets just do that and try
to alleviate the pain after the fact.

BTW, I take it we'll only create the community module on geoserver's
master branch? "appropriate resourcing" is a relative term

Cheers,
Gabriel

Thanks Alessio,

We can move the module to geoserver/community - let me sort out who
can do so and we will send a seperate email asking for community module
shortly.

Please note that the geogig module packages up the geogig datastore,
but more importantly adds several configuration screens for managing geogig
repositories. When a geogig datastore is published it is actually providing
a view of single geogig "branch", so you may have several datastores
configured publishing content from different branches.

I do not think we will need to refactor the code, but the module is
quite old and may need to be updated before it is suitable for use with
geonode.

Dear all,
few time ago, as an active contributor of GeoNode, I rised an issue
about the GeoGig Datastore plugin dependencies which may break or block the
GeoNode releases.

This may happen because the GeoGig plugin is not part of the
standard distribution of GeoServer.

Since this plugin is part of the official distribution of GeoNode,
and since Boundless is open to share this code even if is not in a stable
state, I would like to ask if there is some volunteer from Boundless to
refactor the code a bit a make it available as a GeoServer community module.

On my side I will volunteer to provide GeoNode with the necessary
changes in order to update the dependencies and be sure everything works
fine.

Regards,
Alessio Fabiani.

Right, define some repositories so the datastore has a branch to talk to.

Is it worth holding off on using Java 8 features then? Like if you have
this requirement to back port ...
