That would be a nice thing to do. Justin in the past also referred to the module as
a possible example, sort of a “hello world” for authentication providers, given its
simplicity.

Two questions.

  1. Should I beome the module maintainer ?
  2. This module would be ready to be promoted as an extension, but I am unsure about the procedure.

If you want to, yes

Justin just worked trhough it for the monitoring module. Basically you have to make
a GSIP showing that the module has certain desirable features to become an extension module:
http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/GSIP+86±+Promote+monitor+module+to+extension
