[Geoserver-devel] beta-realease of the os geospatial Live DVD "Arramagong"

Hi all!

LISAsoft just released a new beta-version of the Arramagong Live DVD.
This disk provides the opportunity to try a variety of open source
geospatial applications without the need to install anything new on your
system. It contains for example GeoServer, Mapserver, GRASS, uDig and
many more.

This Live DVD is based on the Ominiverdi LiveDVD/XUbuntu and includes
such supporting applications as Apache Web Server, Apache Tomcat
Application Server, Sun Java, PostgreSQL and PGAdmin.

Besides the applications the Live DVD provides sample data and sample
configurations and projects for most of the installed applications. A
list of the DVD content can be found here:

http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Arramagong_LiveDVD

The current release is only a beta-version and needs to be tested.
Therefore, it would be great if some of you could play a bit with the
DVD. If you discover any problems, please report them here (We don't
have an issue tracker yet):

The iso-image can be downloaded here:

http://download.osgeo.org/livedvd/Arramagong_v1.0Beta1.iso

We are trying to provide for each geospatial application examples, so
the user can play with immediately. Of course, Geoserver comes with its
own examples and we also set up some FeatureTypes for the other sample
data on the DVD. However, if you have any ideas how to improve the
configuration, let me know!

One of our goals for the future, is to have all applications,
configuration and examples as debian packages. This would make creating
the Live DVD much more easier. Maybe someone already has made a
Geoserver-deb-package or wants to help us creating one?

Anyway, we have set up a mailing list for the Live DVD:

http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/live-demo

So if you are interested, just join it!

regards,
stefan

I don't have a .deb package, but for sure people have been complaining
that setting up GeoServer on Ubuntu/Debian boxes is too hard and a
.deb package would be a very welcomed news.
We just lack a packager :frowning:

FYI, One of the things I have only long term todo list is improve the number of packages available for geoserver. I just finished doing up a mac installer for 1.7.1. After that I plan to create an rpm and a deb package.

Great. On Debian boxes we have some troubles with the Tomcat they are
shipping, it would be good to talk with the guy packaging it and
ask if they can lift off some of the security limitations.
Otherwise I guess we'll have to package it as a separate thing,
and thus eat a separate port for GeoServer...

Good to hear Justin!

Jody mentioned to me you might have solution for getting maven-based projects into packages? That would actually very helpful, since we have couple of projects we can't package properly because of that.

cheers,
stefan
