[Geoserver-devel] changing the map on geoserver.org

Anyone have any objection with me changing the front page map?

Right now it’s http://static.geoserver.org/demo/demo.html

See http://geoserver.org

I’d like to put up a map from OSM in a box (which uses GeoServer)

http://static.geoserver.org/demo/demo-box.html

And would give them a link from the front page, along with the link to OSM itself.

Then it won’t look like our renderer sometimes repeats big streets sometimes.

We’re also working on a global OSM base layer, built with MapQuest’s styles, see

http://osm.dev.opengeo.org/geoexplorer/#maps/1

Perhaps when that is live for the globe we could put it up, and maybe do some cool javascript randomizer that puts it in locations of GS developers. Or get some ip detection thing to try to put it where the user is from.

The map looks good. Have they been informed of us linking to their
tiles? They are ok with the load they'd potentially start to get from
that link?

Wondering if that has to do with the chosen styling and/or the metatiling
factor. Unfortunately tiling and labelling do not mix well together.

That sounds cool as well. Different target thought, it seems to me
the first map shows better the variety of styling that GeoServer can
do. It depends on the target of the home page:
- provide a reusable background map
- provide a nice looking map
- show off that GeoServer can do this and that
The actual target imho should be more 2, but with a strong focus
on 3, so that people can perceive at first contact some of the
capabilities of the tool they might want to choose to power their
own cartography.

Cheers

I’ll ask to be sure, but I floated the idea to Stefan at foss4g, and he was in to it. It’s a GWC layer, so shouldn’t be cpu heavy.

Probably? This just seems like a faster way to ‘fix’ the problem.

Cool. I’m down to stick with this map. If we make a global OSM layer that shows off lots then we can entertain switching.

Ok, unless I hear objections I’m going to switch the map over tomorrow.
