Ok, I did a bit of initial testing, and it looks like it is quite possible
to have your emailed comments go directly into the JIRA task. All you
have to do is include jira@anonymised.com in the reply. I only tried
emailing it directly, but a cc should work as well. A simple reply-all
for tasks should work fine.
Jira will only include the comments that do not have a '>' in front of
them, so all reply and forwarded stuff will not be included, only the new
stuff you added to the issue.
So I encourage everyone to do this - we can continue to have discussions
on geoserver-devel, just remember to cc jira@anonymised.com if they are
directly about issues created in jira. In my ideal world we primarily use
jira tasks for project communication, as it sorts things so nicely and
archives so well. This would require people to 'watch' issues as ones
they care about arise - if we ever completely switched to this model it
would be good to have a geoserver-notify list that got _all_ jira
messages. But for now let's just continue to use geoserver-devel for
project communication, and just remember to put anything that is a bug or
an important feature request in jira, ccing jira@anonymised.com on list
discussiong so that comments are recorded permanently.

Chris
