[Geoserver-devel] CSS handler, going back to saving the SLD file

Hi,
as you may know GeoServer now supports styling in languages other than
SLD, provided that there is a StyleHandler implementation that knows how
to parse the new language and turn it into a StyledLayerDescriptor object,
a Java in memory representation of a SLD sheet.

The current CSSHandler implementation does the CSS parsing and translation
on the fly, without saving any SLD of the result.
In theory this is nice and clean, in practice it’s highly problematic for complex
styles, as it might take a lot of time.

So, I want to change the CSSHandler so write the SLD to disk, and use it as
a translation cache, instead (the style will be re-translated if the SLD gets out of date).

This should also care for those that want to see how the CSS to SLD tranlsation
was performed (as it’s tricky business, sometimes you really want to know
what the heck is going on with the map rendering results, or the results of
a call to GetLegendGraphic).

Hi Andrea,

Your approach to use a translation cache is interesting. We have a custom CSS-like language for our 3D rendering engine (C++) for mobile devices, and we also have GeoServer for web clients. There is a mismatch between both styling systems, and also 3D styling has some particular requirements (first of all performance).

I’d be interested to see how such translation cache would work in practice. Due to the mentioned mismatch between SLD and our 3D CSS, I was perspectively looking for a minimal translation between 3D CSS and SLD. A CSSHandler parsing 3D CSS would probably never work reliably, and would be hard to maintain.
