[Geoserver-devel] Data_dir MapBuilder quirk

From playing around a little with my install of GeoServer, I decided to fix some problems on the install file side instead of in my source directory.

I noticed that when modifying the mapbuilder files, everything in data/mbdemos in the data_directory location, the changes didn't take effect. I had to edit the files in the deployed server/geoserver/data/mbdemos directory. It makes sense, mapbuilder doesn't call the data directory, it works in the deployed server location.
So what I am getting to is, with the install files, should we include the mbdemo folder in the data directory, even though it isn't used? Or just include it in the server/geoserver directory? Note that this isn't a problem with the WAR file, just the binary and windows installer packages.

No, the mapbuilder files shouldn't be in the data_dir. Sorry I wasn't
clear about this before.

Hrm, I was pretty sure I didn't include the mbdemos in the data_dir
stuff, but looking at it now it appears to be there. It shouldn't be,
it won't get used, and indeed won't generally work. Indeed that was
one of the biggest problems of the original data dir stuff, so instead
of trying to get it to work, I just moved it out in to it's own. If
you want to actually make extended mapbuilder stuff, then you should do
it in its own war, not in the data_dir.

The plan is to eventually move the mbdemos to a top level directory like
schemas/. But it felt like too much instability, so I just left it in
the cite directories, to be built in whenever geoserver was built, but
not as a part of the data_dir. So yes, please remove the mbdemos from
the data_dirs. The plan for 1.4.x is to migrate everything in the
cite/ dir to the data_dirs directory, and to just have the mapbuilder
stuff all in one single place in the geoserver application.

best regards,

Chris
