a patch for item (1) of http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-3621 is available. I'll also provide a patch for item (2) - when I find the time 
In the meantime, if someone could point me to the wicket stuff relevant to deleting a style (class and html snippet), I'll (try to) take care of implementing the behaviour in the UI. (Something like a simple "purge style file" check box.)

I just applied the patch you submitted (with some tests and a few modifications). Great work! Thanks for that.
You can look at the StyleEditPage in the web-wms module for a place to start on adding purge functionality to the UI.
