+1 on the idea/approach.

I note that the docs will need to be updated as part of GEOS-6383

+1 for master. This is a well-considered idea. I am also comfortable with a backport to 2.5.x in a month or so.

-1 for 2.4.x as this is not strictly a bug and might be surprising to users who are accustomed to the old behaviour. I think we should leave maintenance well enough alone. Furthermore, there are also compatibility problems with xstream on 2.4.x, as you have identified in the GSIP. I am happy to consider argument if this change is deemed pressing.

Kind regards,
Ben.

Let us know when they are sent, so that we can check with the organizations
managing them. Once
we have confirmation I believe we can merge the pull request (well, unless
we get negative feedback
about it... which reminds me about Jody's comment about lack of
documentation on the pull request).

Yep sorry to be a pest, but when we add new functionality it needs to show up in the docs. We already have a few half documented mysteries in the documentation like small traps to ensnare the curious.

I agree, the new functionality needs to be documented for the users. I'm
probably able to spend a few hour on this. So questions:

* As Andrea mentioned, the page "Configuring WMS layers dimensions" is
currently missing, only the one dealing with the Time support exists.
Should there be one?
* If so, where and how comprehensive should in be? This documentation would
be targeted at the users, I assume, so maybe it should cover using the
DimensionEditor?
* Is there a documentation on how the user guide is updated?

Ok, thanks. Looking quickly for the best place for the Dimension editor
documentation, the page
http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/webadmin/data/layers.html seems to
be a close match. The page is getting quite long, but I guess the most
straight forward approach would be to a a new section "Edit Dimensions" or
something like that before "Add or Delete a Layer".

I haven’t had a chance to look at this work, but I’m wondering if the functionality also works via the REST config API. For many applications, this is probably more critical than the web UI.

Good point, I'm hot familiar with the REST config API. Does it enable
modifying the layer configuration directly based on defined catalog java
classes (like DimensionInfo), or is it necessary to modify some APIs
manually?

Ok, thanks. Looking quickly for the best place for the Dimension editor
documentation, the page
http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/webadmin/data/layers.html seems
to be a close match. The page is getting quite long, but I guess the most
straight forward approach would be to a a new section "Edit Dimensions" or
something like that before "Add or Delete a Layer".

I agree, the new functionality needs to be documented for the users.
I'm probably able to spend a few hour on this. So questions:

* As Andrea mentioned, the page "Configuring WMS layers dimensions" is
currently missing, only the one dealing with the Time support exists.
Should there be one?
* If so, where and how comprehensive should in be? This documentation
would be targeted at the users, I assume, so maybe it should cover using
the DimensionEditor?
* Is there a documentation on how the user guide is updated?

Not really, REST basically uses whatever we already use to store the config

Normally to have things working for REST config at most one has to add some
xstream aliases, in case we get class names

Ok, in this case the dimension default value settings for REST should be
there already, see

examples on how the default values are presented in the config XML.

Hi Andrea,

I’ve now committed a patch for the Webadmin/Layers documentation page containing a new section “Edit dimensions”. The screenshot is not the best possible one, but i was having trouble finding a good dataset from the Geoserver built-in resources to demonstrate the dimension settings. I guess it would be a bit more stylish if the screenshots in the documentation would feature the GS default datasets.

Anyway, this change is now available in my github repo for merging: https://github.com/ilkkarinne/geoserver/tree/dim_default_value2

The Github rendering of the modified page is visible at https://github.com/ilkkarinne/geoserver/blob/dim_default_value2/doc/en/user/source/webadmin/data/layers.rst
