Which says 1.5 or above.
But http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/production/java.html has a note that 2.2.x requires java 6.
Just want to confirm, we should update those docs, no?
I may be able to do it, or can file a jira and try to find someone to. (I had got thrown off by the first one a few days ago. Thought we had moved to java 6 but then the first one seemed to be the definitive reference).

Yep, 2.2.0 onwards we require java 6, the docs should be updated
