[Geoserver-devel] EmbeddedTomcat

I was wondering what the purpose of the embedded tomcat is? Is it just there for testing?

Simon

The intent is to make geoserver _very_ easy for new users to set up.
Like users who just want to share their geographic data, but aren't
sys admins or experts of any kind. Instead of having to deal with
setting up a servlet container and other software just to get going
they should be able to just run a start-up script. That's the vision
at least. The reality isn't so close, as you still pretty much need
ant, and it's not very easy to configure. Once we have a gui
configuration tool the embedded tomcat should be a lot more useful, we
can just distribute binaries, and people should be able to get it up
and running with out nearly as much hassle. Of course for users who
know what they're doing we'll still continue to recommend using a non-
embedded servlet container. So the embedded tomcat is there for
testing, but with future plans to make geoserver set up very easy,
while retaining the power and flexibility of servlets. We have
contemplated also releasing a lighter version of geoserver without the
bulk of the jars needed to run the embedded tomcat, but just haven't
quite motivated for it. If people really want it we can try to do so
for the next release.

I see. I would certainly welcome a light version release without
embedded tomcat. But on the other hand I'm anyway working with the cvs
version so I can just as well delete all the embedded tomcat related
files on my own. By the way, setting up tomcat is not really that
difficult, but I certainly understand the idea of embedded tomcat.
