[Geoserver-devel] Environment properties access from ftl templates

Hi,
I would like to add the possibility to access, from GetFeatureInfo ftl templates,
environment properties (those accessible through System.getProperties() ) using a specific variable name (system, for example).
We did a similar thing some time ago for request parameters, using the variable request.

With this improvement we will be able to write this kind of stuff in the template:

and resolve WEB_SITE_URL with a setting in Tomcat startup script, such as:

-DWEB_SITE_URL=“http://mysite.com/”

My purpose is to have templates that can be installed in different environments and where some details are different and be able to specify those details from a starting script.

Any thoughts, objections or advices?

I get the need, it looks like this is for system properties rather than environmental variables.

I have a related idea I will send out a seperate email thread on.

I'd suggest to use GoeServerExtensions.getProperty(String) to lookup
variables, as it can lookup from web.xml, system and enviroment variable,
the mechanism is already familar to GeoServer users (data dir, logging dir,
and so on, there are some ~50 references to those getProperty(*) methods
spread in the code base),
and having a choice of multiple ways to set the values can be handy.

Uhm… I guess I can create a proper wrapper to make the usage of GoeServerExtensions.getProperty(String) transparent to the template engine. I will investigate on it. Thank you.

the mechanism is already familar to GeoServer users (data dir, logging dir, and so on, there are some ~50 references to those getProperty(*) methods spread in the code base),
and having a choice of multiple ways to set the values can be handy.
