[Geoserver-devel] Extension to RGB + A

Hi all,

I see that the property ChannelSelection has only RGB channels, i need to use all the RGBA channels.

In fact in my image the AlphaChannel is an important information too. And each cell has one different value, so because this i cant use things like RAMP/VALUE colormap.

It is possible to use something like in sld? If don’t, can i do this by implementing a geoserver extension?

i will have to
How can i do this?

Hi Danilo,
as far as I know there is no support for alpha channel in there.

You’ll have to make a code extension in GeoTools, which might not be simple since the current API,
derived from the SLD spec, goes like this:

/**

  • Set the RGB channels to be used

the code changes to the developer series:

Hope this helps (even if it’s probably not what you wanted to hear :-p )

Hi Danilo,
that sounds great!

Just a word of warning, normally you should do the proposal first (maybe do a tiny prototype
to figure out where you want to make the changes, it’s up to you), and then the coding.
If you do the opposite, it’s fine too, but don’t complain if/when you get change request on your

proposal that will force you to rewrite part of the code :wink:

Ok, i will create the prototype :).

But where i can get information how to get the entire source code? Because for example the org.geotools.styling.ChannelSelection is part of a jar (gt-api-11), and even with the -DdownloadSources i cant edit the source code.
What i am doing wrong to not get all the source code dependencies?

Danilo,

to edit GeoTools source files, you must download and build GeoTools from source. Source jar attachments are read-only. You will also need to run "mvn clean install" for GeoTools and refresh Eclipse before changes will be seen by GeoServer projects.

Kind regards,
Ben.

What i am doing wrong to not get all the source code dependencies?

Hi Danilo,
that sounds great!

Just a word of warning, normally you should do the proposal first (maybe
do a tiny prototype
to figure out where you want to make the changes, it's up to you), and
then the coding.
If you do the opposite, it's fine too, but don't complain if/when you get
change request on your
proposal that will force you to rewrite part of the code :wink:

Hi Danilo,
as far as I know there is no support for alpha channel in there.

You'll have to make a code extension in GeoTools, which might not be
simple since the current API,
derived from the SLD spec, goes like this:

     /**
      * Set the RGB channels to be used
      *
      * @param red the red channel
      * @param green the green channel
      * @param blue the blue channel
      */
     void setRGBChannels(SelectedChannelType red, SelectedChannelType
green, SelectedChannelType blue);

     /**
      * Set the RGB channels to be used
      *
      * @param channels array of channels in RGB order
      */
     void setRGBChannels(SelectedChannelType channels);

and all the code dealing with style parsing, encoding and rendering has
enumerations or explicit mentions
of "red", "green" and "blue".
So public API breaking seems to be necessary, which implies that you'll
have to make a proposal and restrict
the code changes to the developer series:
http://docs.geotools.org/latest/developer/procedures/proposal.html

Hope this helps (even if it's probably not what you wanted to hear :-p )

Cheers
Andrea

It is possible to use something like <AlphaCHannel> in sld? If don't,

Hi Danilo,
WCS will allow to perform channel selection, yes. However:

  • It’s an entirely different protocol (WMS clients won’t support it)

  • There is no way to perform contrast stretching like in SLD
    If those are not issues for you, then yes, you can perform an extraction using WCS (recommended version, 2.0)

Cheers
