[Geoserver-devel] Fixing master CITE tests

Hi,
I’ve been looking into why the CITE tests are not starting up yet (quite fed up of
seeing all those build failures once a day) and I believe I’ve found the issue.

The run.sh now does the following:
echo “jetty.http.port=11010” > …/start.ini

This ends up setting up the wrong variable (it’s called jetty.port) and wipes
out all of the many other configurations in the start.ini file, see its full contents here:
https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/blob/master/src/release/jetty/start.ini

Replacing that line with this seems to do the trick:
sed -i “s/jetty.port=8080/jetty.port=11010/g” …/start.ini

Unfortunately I have no rights to modify that file and actually check it does the trick

PS: how did I discover it? I noticed that the nightly build started fine on my system,
so I created a local git repo in it, downloaded the run.sh file, and started playing by hand
the commands modifying the jetty config by hand, committing at every change, until
I’ve found the one that broke the startup… at that point a “git diff” showed the reason
for the failed startup.

I had fixed this previously and we had moved on to the issue with the GeoServer not starting due to GeoTools logging….will fix again

Don’t think it has anything to do with port numbers (at least right now). The logs seem to indicate that Jetty can’t actually find any web applications to run.

Looking at the Jenkins logs I see:

+ ./startup.sh -Djetty.http.port=11010
WARNING: Module not found [ssl]

Usage: java -jar start.jar [options] [properties] [configs]
       java -jar start.jar --help  # for more information

Then, when ssh’ing into ares and running manually I see the same problem when running on the console. Looking at the Jetty output I see this:

jenkins@anonymised.com:~/workspace/geoserver-cite/geoserver/geoserver-2.9-SNAPSHOT/bin$ more geoserver.log

GEOSERVER_HOME environment variable not found, using current

location. If not set then running this script from other

directories will not work in the future.

GEOSERVER DATA DIR is /var/lib/jenkins/workspace/geoserver-cite/geoserver_data/master/citewcs-1.0

WARNING: Nothing to start, exiting …

This only happens when running a CITE test on the Master branch — 2.8.x seems to be working fine - and is being run with the exact same command:

Cab somebody more familiar with the Jetty setup jump in? Is GEOSERVER_HOME required?

No, it should not be required, in fact in my local tests it was no set....
I'm not an expert in Jetty but... can you maybe fix the script and run it
again on jenkins?
I'll then download the entire workspace as a zip and see if I can figure
out what's going on.

I was testing to see if it made a difference - so I added that line and was trying it both ways. Just switched it back now…

Call me crazy…but maybe we can put that script in Github?

Not sure... I mean, the entire thing also need a specific directory layout
to work, the script by itself is not enough.

Also, we are supposed to switch master to the new CITE engine... which will
require time, so we still need the
old system going, but I would not invest all that much time in the old one.

Anyways, I'm pretty open to all avenues, if you feel it's best to put it on
github, I'm game.

I just want it to be easy to maintain and track…would also be nice not to require sudo to make changes! Maybe we wait until the switch to the new CITE engine?

the job updates from git, I could help without needing
to get direct server access.

as well and can resume thinking about the next updates… like the switch to Java 8
