I get the following exception, and GeoServer terminates:

Yes I get this exception as well. It doesn't really effect anything unless you are using the ArcSDE datastore. This is probably one for geotools as the logger cant reflectivley call the appropriate method with its current modifiers.
I will make a jira task to look into this one.
