[Geoserver-devel] geogig community module retirement

As far as I know there’s no one working or going to work on the current geogig community module.

I’m not sure if there’s a policy to retire community modules where the company behind it shows no more interest and doesn’t actively retire it.

In any case I’d like to call for retirement of the geogig community module, in the interest of keeping geoserver’s code base focused on active and supported modules and avoid cluttering.

Opinions? objections?

Hi Gabriel,
community modules are by definition unsupported, and don’t get their tests run (build breaking privilege is for modules
with someone behind the wheel).

Typically a module stays there in the hope of raising some interest, sometimes even for years, as long as it does not
break the build with a compile failure, at which point it gets removed from the “communityRelease” profile.
Even in that case, we normally keep the module around for a while, some might come out and resurrect it (it happened
systematically after big sprints that made heavy changes to the code base).

Personally I have no stake in the module, so I would not notice if it’s gone or not, but I’d give a chance anyways?
No strong opinion, if the majority would like to see it gone or just nobody cares, by all means, lets remove it.

Hi Gabriel,
there is discussion to discontinue the module from GeoNode as well.

That said, I am +0 to remove it but as Andrea said it is unsupported
by definition so it's your choice.
I personally prefer to see less code but supported.
