I don’t think so, but since we have some customers using a 2.4.x version it would be good to have a nightly including the improvements. To tell you the truth, I am not sure if 2.4.x nightlies are still generated. If not, I will skip the 2.4.x backport.

2.4.x nightlies are not generate any longer.

Anyhow, I would backport to 2.4.x if that does not require too much time.

We still make bug fix releases, but are not back porting any new features.

For reference we are getting some downloads of the maintenance branch, but nothing compared to the latest. I expect 2.4.x to remain popular as organizations wrestle with the requirement to upgrade to Java 7.

The GeoServer project does not have any more 2.4.x releases planned,
though, if we found the resources, it might not be a bad thing
to keep on doing them

That should be GeoServer 2.5.x (i.e. our last java 6 release).
