[Geoserver-devel] GEOSDEV space

Is this space actually used for anything?

http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDEV/Home

To my untrained eye, it doesn't look like it's been updated in forever, and I think it's rather confusing to have three different spaces. If there are development pages there that people want to keep, they can be subsumed into the main GEOS space. There is already an RnD page there (also, looking only marginally up to date). Please let me know if there are any pages currently being maintained in GEOSDEV, and I can take care of them.

Mike,

Once, long long ago, I tried to straighten up GEOSDEV a little bit,
clean out the old stuff and see if anyone wanted to use it as a "Not
GEOSDOC and also not GEOS" space. Geotools has the following spaces:

GEOTOOLS -- the main geotools front-page site
GEOT -- the "developers/developers guide" site
GEOSDOC -- the "users guide" site

I had thought (at the time) that geoserver did/would use their three
sites the same way:

GEOS -- main geoserver site
GEOSDOC -- "users guide" site
GEOSDEV -- "developers/developers guide" site

However, the last one never really caught on, and most development
related wiki stuff (GSIPs, proposals, etc) are all in the GEOS space now
(like here: http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/RnD)

There's a small bit of valuable info on GEOSDEV right now (see this
page: http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/RnD -- these first three
are all relatively recent and notable projects that should get moved
over to the gs.org->GEOS/RnD page, probably)

Some good effort was put into this at one time:
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/GeoServer+Planning

Here's some good historical context -- probably not really relevant
anymore, except as background info:
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/Open+Web+Services+Framework

Anyway, it'd be good to go through the entire (small) set of pages in
GEOSDEV and see what's worth saving.

Hi Saul. Thanks for chiming in. It doesn't sound/look to me like there are enough DEV pages to really merit its own space, but please feel free to disagree.

I think I'm too new on the project to go through GEOSDEV by myself (although I can and am willing to if it is voted that way), but if I could enlist one person's help to see what is still relevant to move (aside from the RnD info), I can do the legwork on the moving.

Thanks,
Mike

I agree with you mike. We should kill this space. So yeah. the developers should go through and let you know if there are any pages worth salvaging before you axe it.

Yeah, +1 from me too.

My earlier email definitely wasn't intended to defend the space...it
should go! I just think we should do a mini salvage operation there
first (if possible).

Okay folks. So I'd like to keep this issue alive, but I don't want to bother people, sooooooo...

On Friday, April 25th, I will bring GEOSDEV offline. In the intervening 15 days anyone can:

1) move important pages from GEOSDEV to GEOS
2) give me a list of pages to be moved, and I will move them

I'll send a reminder about halfway down. I think this should be enough time for busy people.

If you have any questions, please let me know. This is just one of the pieces of the puzzle that is getting our documentation in better working order.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Can you save the following pages?

1) Andrea: is this still relevant to how we do Format Options, or is
there a better page in the real GEOS docs that describes this better?

http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/Format+Options

2) http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/GetLegendGraphic
+Improvements

I'm pretty sure #2 is still relevant. It might be the only thing in
there that is.

Don't miss this year's exciting event. There's still time to save $100.
Use priority code J8TL2D2.

The GEOSDEV space has been removed. I have a full backup (XML, PDF, and HTML, with attachments) so that information can be restored if necessary. If someone would like copies of this backup, or if it should be posted somewhere, please let me know.

In addition, the following pages were successfully moved:

http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDEV/Format+Options
to
http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/Format+Options

http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDEV/GetLegendGraphic+Improvements
to
http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/GetLegendGraphic+Improvements

If anyone knows how to remove the Dev space listing from the Dashboard, please let me know.

Thanks for everyone's help. We are one step closer to better docs now.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Can you save the following pages?

1) Andrea: is this still relevant to how we do Format Options, or is
there a better page in the real GEOS docs that describes this better?

http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/Format+Options

2) http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/GetLegendGraphic
+Improvements

I'm pretty sure #2 is still relevant. It might be the only thing in
there that is.

Hi all. Reminder that in one week (4/25) the GEOSDEV space will be removed. If you care about anything on that site, please move it to GEOS, or ask me to do so.

Thanks again,
Mike

Thanks,
Mike

My earlier email definitely wasn't intended to defend the space...it
should go! I just think we should do a mini salvage operation there
first (if possible).

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Once, long long ago, I tried to straighten up GEOSDEV a little bit,
clean out the old stuff and see if anyone wanted to use it as a "Not
GEOSDOC and also not GEOS" space. Geotools has the following spaces:

GEOTOOLS -- the main geotools front-page site
GEOT -- the "developers/developers guide" site
GEOSDOC -- the "users guide" site

I had thought (at the time) that geoserver did/would use their three
sites the same way:

GEOS -- main geoserver site
GEOSDOC -- "users guide" site
GEOSDEV -- "developers/developers guide" site

However, the last one never really caught on, and most development
related wiki stuff (GSIPs, proposals, etc) are all in the GEOS space now
(like here: http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/RnD)

There's a small bit of valuable info on GEOSDEV right now (see this
page: http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/RnD -- these first three
are all relatively recent and notable projects that should get moved
over to the gs.org->GEOS/RnD page, probably)

Some good effort was put into this at one time:
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/GeoServer+Planning

Here's some good historical context -- probably not really relevant
anymore, except as background info:
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/Open+Web+Services+Framework

Anyway, it'd be good to go through the entire (small) set of pages in
GEOSDEV and see what's worth saving.
