Well I have checked out GeoServer 1.5 (or at least trunk?) and managed to build without anything more then a document glitch noted previously.
The default set of information poping out of WMS looks a bit funny in uDig ... a layer called "~gtiff172030523_192_106_...." kind of makes for a poor title.
Performance seems fun, Jesse will report back later with the results of trying out the Raster support directly on uDig trunk.
