Thanks for the release work. I downloaded the war and htmldocs, booted the war on tomcat8:

  • GeoServer Version 2.12.3
  • Git Revision 86938b34177ae82a43126a54babab2ab3df42863
  • Build Date 22-Apr-2018 08:14
  • GeoTools Version 18.3 (rev 6fda2a4abc4bf6b36032096ba418f61811901c28)
  • GeoWebCache Version 1.12.3 (rev 1.12.x/887e07552fd0b9dc834dbd4fe3cc644cf242ee74)

Checked some capabilities, a few layer previews, logged in. Pretty light testing, no extension modules, but all looks good from what I tested – nothing objectionable in the logs.

Opened up the htmldocs, both developer and user look OK, have the right version number.

Got something odd, downloaded geoserver-2.12.3-bin.zp

Unpacking shows start.jar and start.ini, which I usually associate with a Mac build? Running start.jar refuses to start, not signed. When given a pass via macOS security settings it does startup - but just shows a “main” menu, with an about “About main” entry.

Using bin/startup.sh runs geoserver and appears fine.

Hi Jody,
I never heard that one could just start “start.jar”, is it something Mac specific? The documented way to start GeoServer is to run start.sh
The start.ini is the Jetty configuration file, has been there before. Maybe there is some confusion because we don’t have an installer anymore?

Jars with the correct manifest (documenting a main method) can be run on mac, windows and linux as long as the file association is setup …
As long as it has been there before we should be fine.

Jody, you're often so literal.... Let me rephrase using all the words
needed:

"I never heard that one could just start *GeoServer double clicking on*
"start.jar", is it something Mac specific"ù

You were complaining that GeoServer would not start using start.jar, I
thought the context was obvious...
