How do folks feel about sending these “please test” emails to the user list?

I would like to involve our user community more, and right now we just invite them to test release candidate for a few weeks:

  • pros: reach out to collaborate with user list on more than just support, we can thank those who test in the release announcement and build sense of being included etc…
  • cons: may confuse the messaging around the eventual release

I agree with the spirit and the message… not with the timing. Testing when the release is already done is a waste of release manager time,
if anything major comes up, the release has to be redone.

However, a release is very close to a rebranded nightly build, so… why don’t we sent the message a few days before
the release instead, and ask people to try out the nightlies?

Probably not… not sure we want to keep that file, who looks at it nowadays? One just goes straight to docs, I think

I like that idea, so the same time we ask the developers if any fixes are pending we can ask the user list to test a nightly build :slight_smile:

I do not see anything obviously wrong with build_release.sh, I would recommend adding additional echo statements and running again.

The tagged sources indeed still depend on snapshots:

I think I know what it is… the build had, what seemed to us, new parameters that we could not understand:
“Skips the build of GeoTools revision”
“Skips the build of GeoWebCache revision”
Which makes it seem it would rebuild the respective projects.

Looking at the script, setting them to “skip” actually skips a build of the projects (and why would we do another build
of them anyways?) but also skips setting gt_tag:

and without gt_tag, the version number is not set later:
https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/blob/master/build/build_release.sh#L190

Looking at the script history, that section has been there for ages… but I don’t remember seeing the

I added those parameters to the build quite some time ago (maybe two years ago) when getting frustrated with deployment security issues. The flags as you noted were already in the build at the time. I did not change their name or documentation.

Hi All,

I re-run the release job, the artifacts are available here. The About page now shows the release version of GT and GWC:

The GT and GWC revisions differ due to the release commits on the respective branches, no changes to the code. I’ll
move on with the publishing job now.
