Yeah, from what I know the mysql module in gt2 is in pretty decent
shape. It's on my list to test out, and actually it would be a great
contribution if you could get it going on geoserver. It really should
not be too hard, if it works (I just haven't tested it myself at all).
Like it would be as easy as building from geotools and then putting the
resulting jar in the lib directory of GeoServer. We've strived to make
DataStores very pluggable, so if the module author wrote it right then
it will work right away. If not then you may need to mess with the
web-inf services stuff, and do some testing. But he says it works with
3.23 and 4.1 alpha, which has the new spatial extensions. To get it in
GeoServer I just want someone other than the author to test it out
(which will be me when I get the time, but somone else could easily do
it), and then have someone willing to answer questions on the mailing
list (I've been meaning to ask the module author if he'd be willing to
do that, or someone who tests it out well could also perform the role).
But yeah, as far as I know no one has done it yet, and as soon as
someone does it with the geotools module I'm more than happy to roll it
in for all. There's also a Geomedia datastore in geotools which could
use the same treatment, as well as some tiger parsing stuff that I
haven't looked into at all.

Seems like GeoTools are making or trying to make progress on mysql.
