[Geoserver-devel] GeoServer code sprint 2017, who's interested in participating and/or sponsoring?

Hi,
say that we setup a code spring in late February/March.

Say that the topic would be upgrading the CITE tests and adding all the new exciting ones we’re
missing (e.g., WFS 2.0, WCS 2.0, WMTS, WPS, …), in other words, getting up to speed
with the OGC compliance. (if this topic puts you off, let us know what would be a better one for you).

Say also we organize the sprint at the GeoSolutions offices in beautiful Tuscany for
a week long.

Question:

  • Who would be interested in joining as a participating?

  • Who would be interested in sponsoring?

  • Do you have any preferred week between say Feb 13 and end of March?
    My answers:

  • I’m in, but I won’t be available Jan 30-Feb 2

Cheers
Andrea

I can't speak for Boundless except that I have forwarded on this on to the decision makers and keepers of the budget, to see what if anything we can do. And that I would very much like to go.

And for what it's worth, later is better for me (end of March great, beginning of March okay, February not great).

Thanks for offering to host!

Thanks for keeping the conversation going over the break mike; I did mange to speak to the decision makers and Boundless is keen on an early March sprint. I also have some capacity to help with call for sponsorship and organization (like last year) if that can be of assistance …

I won’t be able to attend next week’s meeting; I trust a date can be established.

Jody Garnett

Hi Jody,
I have a feeling participation might be actually linked to the topic being chosen
for the sprint. So I’d rather first establish that.

So far I’ve heard:

  1. CITE tests
  2. Upgrade GeoTools/GeoServer to work on Java 9
  3. Switch REST API to Spring MVC
  4. Assorted library upgrades (hsql, h2, commons-dbcp, log4j, wicket)
    Am I missing any?

Personally I’m a bit skeptical about 2), as important as it is, it seems better suited to be tackled by
a very small team (2 people max?) as it involves, in my understanding, rewriting some core java classes without any license issue,
and then changing a bunch of imports. The others seem more suitable for swarming with a larger team
(like 5-10 people).

Cheers

Hi Jody,

I would very much agree.

So far I’ve heard:

  1. CITE tests

While worth of a sprint I doubt this activity can attract much sponsorship/enthusiasm. I will be working on it anyways and feel a bit over my head :stuck_out_tongue:

  1. Upgrade GeoTools/GeoServer to work on Java 9

Yeah scratch 2; think that can be a small focused effort as you say.

  1. Switch REST API to Spring MVC

I think this represents the largest pain for for our user community in the mix - +1

  1. Assorted library upgrades (hsql, h2, commons-dbcp, log4j, wicket)

Not sure how extensive an undertaking this is, would like to avoid falling behind.

Am I missing any?

One idea for beers (if not yet a sprint) is could support mapbox style in geoserver (since it appeared in openlayers recently).

Thanks for pushing this along Andrea.

Yeah, lots of tickets, but most complaining about functionality, not the
library stuff has been implemented with.

My main fear is that we'd be spending the week doing a library switch and
leave that pile untouched, if not grown due to behavior changes in the
switch.

Yeah, that is indeed a problem, if we paralellize the upgrades we might end
up not coming to a convergence.

My main fear is that we'd be spending the week doing a library switch and
leave that pile untouched, if not grown due to behavior changes in the
switch.

Even if we only manage to pull off a library switch, I feel like that

would be beneficial in making it easier to implement various
requested/broken functionality. From my experience with Spring MVC, it is
much nicer to use and modify than what we are currently using.

Hey,

Just to let you know. I am really interested in coming over for the spring, but I can’t promise anything 100% yet for a couple of reasons. Possibly part of it.

Yeah, it’s just that space in the GeoSolutions offices is somewhat limited. Not sure how much, Simone might want to chime in, but I’d say in the order of 10 free spots or something like that.

Hey,

Just to let you know. I am really interested in coming over for the spring, but I can’t promise anything 100% yet for a couple of reasons. Possibly part of it.

I have a feeling participation might be actually linked to the topic being chosen
for the sprint. So I’d rather first establish that.

Jody

Hi all,

Threw my name, I’m interested. I think CITE and REST would both be great things to tackle.

Yeah, it’s just that space in the GeoSolutions offices is somewhat limited. Not sure how much, Simone might want to chime in, but I’d say in the order of 10 free spots or something like that.
