Dear GeoServer community,
this is a follow up on the minting of a persitent Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for the GeoServer repository with the Zenodo Open Access Repository (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7661351) in 2022. DOI are a best practice in digital science and allow propagation of due credit by citation both for software project and the members project teams. The current set-up for GeoServer already creates automated updates of the Zenodo record for every new release of GeoServer.
I would like to note an improvement option for the GeoServer-Zenodo-Integration (and your ORCID accounts):
Currently, the Geoserver codebase contains a JSON file to provide metadata about the authors (https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/blob/main/.zenodo.json).
This could be extended by adding CITATION.CFF file to the codebase to include links to the ORCID accounts of the authors.
The benefits of such links are twofold:
1) The authors personal ORCID pages are automatically linked/accessible from the Zenodo page for GeoServer (e.g. for PROJ: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7764301 -> note the grren ORCID icons in the authors list).
2) The authors ORCID records get automagically updated for each GeoServer release.
Both PROJ and actinia are already using CITATION.CFF files, e.g. https://github.com/OSGeo/PROJ/blob/master/CITATION.cff.
The ORCID pages of the PROJ team members Javier (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7227-9173) and Elliott (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7310-8942) demonstrate how the credit for the latest PROJ software release has been automatically been added to their record of works in ORCID (enabled through the CITATION.CFF file in the PROJ repo).
More information about the process here:

Best,
Peter
