[Geoserver-devel] GeoServer officially graduated in OSGeo: can you help me craft a message for the board?

Hi,
I just had news that all the board member gave a positive vote for the GeoServer
graduation, so first off, congratulations to everybody, and in particular to the
team that did the provenance review during the australian sprint some time ago.

Now, I’ve been asked to craft a message that OSGeo can quote in the official
OSGeo announcement.

Not sure what to say… some help needed.

If we look at previous graduation announcement, the message might look like:

OSGeo is pleased to announce that the GeoServer project has graduated from the incubation process and is now a full fledged OSGeo project with Andrea Aime appointed as project representative (PSC Member, GeoServer).

GeoServer is an open source software server written in Java that allows users to share and edit geospatial data. Designed for interoperability, it publishes data from any major spatial data source using open standards.
Being a community-driven project, GeoServer is developed, tested, and supported by a diverse group of individuals and organizations from around the world.
GeoServer is the reference implementation of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Feature Service (WFS) and Web Coverage Service (WCS) standards, as well as a high performance certified compliant Web Map Service (WMS), as well as an implementing Web Processing Service (WPS) service.

Graduating incubation includes requirements for open community operation, a responsible project governance model, code provenance and license verification and general good project operation. Graduating incubation is the OSGeo seal of approval for a project and gives potential users of the project added confidence in the viability and safety of the project.

If instead they want some quote from us… maybe something like this?

The GeoServer PSC is thrilled about the OSGeo graduation. Even if GeoServer has not been an official
OSGeo project so far, several of the GeoServer PSC has been long involved in OSGeo as chapter members,
as active participants to the open source GIS conferences, and supportive of the OSGeo goals as a whole.
As such we are very happy to official join the OSGeo community along with all the other project that managed
to prove their openness and stability.

Meh… yeah, not great… help?

Cheers
Andrea

Congratulations!

A couple of points if I may:

  • Define PSC. I’m guessing its not “Project Star Chamber”; probably “Project Steering Committee”?

  • When stating GeoServer is the reference implementation - might it be worth specifying which versions of those protocols its the reference implementation for? I.e. Wikipedia says “Rasdaman” is (candidate?) reference implementation for WCS 2.x with GeoServer being for WCS 1.x.

Again, congratulations.

Hey Andrea,

I thought your cut was pretty good. Here is a slightly tweaked version, a little less verbose in some places. And afaik it is now incorrect to say “the reference implementation”, but more “a reference implementation”.

Minor correct to the text on the wiki - Andrea is “project officer” for GeoServer

Other than that I would like to reword the text to be positive (“even though” sounds like we have reservations).

BEFORE:
The GeoServer Project Steering Committee says, “The GeoServer team is thrilled about OSGeo membership. Even though GeoServer has not been an official OSGeo project until now, there have always been strong ties between the two communities with several of the GeoServer developers being involved with OSGeo as chapter members and active participants in various OSGeo conferences. As such we are very happy to now officially be part of OSGeo and a member of such an esteemed group of projects.”

AFTER:
The project steering committee says, “The GeoServer team is thrilled to be recognized as a full OSGEo project. There have been strong ties between the two communities with several GeoServer developers being involved as charter members, volunteering at the committee level and represented in local OSGeo chapters. We are very happy to be an official part of OSGeo and a member of such an esteemed group of projects.”
