I’m a graduate student in the geography and geospatial sciences at the University of Texas in Dallas, and this summer I am enrolled in GIS workshop where I will “independently design and conduct a GIS-based project”. My project must involve working with data (even if just for demonstration of techniques) and research (i.e. literature review).
Since I am already working in software development, and have always wanted to contribute to open source, I thought it would be a great idea to implement enhancements to GeoServer as part of my project.
I looked at GSoC project ideas, and was drawn to a project from 2009 involving adding H2 support to GeoServer to improve the performance of Shapefile processing. Link is here: http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/H2+Spatial+Database
Does anyone know if this idea has already been worked on? I think it would make an excellent topic for my project, so if it is not being worked on I would volunteer myself. If not, please reply with other project ideas to be discussed. In the meantime, I will take a lap around the Developer Manual to make sure I’m familiar with the project, and get up and running - maybe even fix a bug.
Thank-you for your help!
Andrew
