[Geoserver-devel] GeoServer releases and QA

Recently on the uDig list we have been getting some complaints about GeoServer releases no longer working with our application. Apparently 1.3.x (a new one every other week?) is troubled, but the recent GeoServer 1.4.x release was okay...

Could I ask for a couple day's notice (email?) about what is going on please? I see that Brent has put up a proposal (so I can make the comment there) and Justin was asking after a GeoTools release this week in order to make a GeoServer release....

Some questions:
Q: Justin what GeoServer release are you trying to make? GeoServer w/ WCS I assume, but I am not sure what version number that would have? My best guess would be 1.5-M0 or something ...

All the best,
Jody

Every other week? The last 1.3.x was over two months ago. And the last release of any kind was a month ago. I wish we were at every other week.

What were the problems? If you report them we can probably get fixes in pretty quickly.

So you want a warning whenever a release is going to come out soon so you can hand test it with udig each time?

We're releasing a new 1.4.x on friday or monday. My general philosophy is release early and often, so that there's not a _huge_ overhead in testing, if a client app is having troubles we can quickly put out another release.

Thanks, we just got reports from a couple sources yesterday and are in contact with Brent - hopefully a bug report will come out of it soon.

Well what I would like is:
a) one weeks notice if a new geotools release is needed (need to clear that with geotools PMC who have the responsibility for releases)
b) a couple days notice to see if the new release can be used for our GeoServer editing walkthrough

Fair enough, do you know if the geotools 2.3 release Justin was trying for had anything to do with the 1.4.x release train? I would like to confirm that it does not (and ensure 1.4.x is staying on 2.2.x), the only reason I can think for the 2.3 release would be for a WCS release of some description - but so far things have been quiet in that direction.

No it does not, 1.4.x is on 2.2.x. I think he may have just been doing the release to help out. He may be using it for his wfs 1.1 stuff, but we don't need a release of that anytime soon.

Cool, thanks for the communication. It *would* be nice to see a release of WCS one of these days

The WCS is ready for the release, at least on monday we will release GeoServer WCS against Geotools 2.3-M0, even if we are alredy working on Geotools 2.4.x.

woot!

I'm just finishing last testing and minor bug fixing right now!

Very cool  And thanks for wait on the GeoTools release ... so far GeoServer WCS is the only project interested in 2.3.x in the short term.

Hum, did the walkthrough break client side or server side (I guess the
release managed to break something).

The walkthrough broke for our old uDig 1.0 application (so the change must be
something on the geoserver side).

Just wondering if a recording of the WFS calls made during the walkthru
could be used as an automated test on the server side.

That is a good idea, it is also important to run through the demo requests
(although I have not heard of any problems w/ respect to that for some time now).
