Yes, I have not got geotools at all as I am jumping between PC and mac,
since I just can't get the .ecw file to make tiffs geoserver will read on
windows (mapserver reads them ok though) - my other thread I am wasting your

Ah, ok, ecw is a thought one.
Basically, there is no pure java reader. Geosolutions has an ECW reader based on gdal and jgdal, but it's not ready to be published as far
as I know, and it would have the same issues as jai, amplified by the
fact the native component must be there.
If you really need to read ecw and you can pay for a custom solution
I think Geosolutions can provide an ecw reader for you... not sure they
have macs thought.
