Hi,
I was remembering this ticket https://osgeo-org.atlassian.net/browse/GEOS-7488 and it seems that Tanukisoftware does not offer Windows 64 wrapper in the community version. So I guess that the GeoNetwork installer is using some other wrapper.
I believe that having 64 bit only is OK. Is there anything that won’t work with that? Some native JAI things perhaps, or?

It’s actually the opposite: the GeoNetwork installer requires 64-bits Java. But if I recall correctly, the wrapper supports both, so in theory we can build 32 and 64-bits installers, if needed.

Yes, exactly, the Tanuki one was preferable, but not available on Windows 64-bits in this case. So I decided to use the Java Service Launcher which is super easy to set up and free to use for everyone (and I haven’t had any trouble with it yet).
I can’t tell if 32-bits is no longer required. Are there some user statistics for that?

Coming back to the wrapper, this one might be more robust/reliable: https://sourceforge.net/projects/wrapper/
I’d be happy to use that instead or whatever wrapper works best (and fits the license).

Sorry for the mail bombardment, but I remember I also tried out YAJSW. However, that one wasn’t so easy to set up and I wasn’t able to get it to work within the available time. If there’s someone who’s more into Java than I am and could assist me, I’d be happy to give this one another try.

Hi Sander,
I don’t have a straight suggestion to try out, but I was thinking, Tomcat seems to have a good windows installer, with service support and
(I believe) 64 bit support.
The Ant build file has some references:
https://github.com/apache/tomcat/blob/master/build.xml#L2181 (and more, search for Windows in it)
I have the impression they are using this project:
https://commons.apache.org/proper/commons-daemon/
Cheers

Ah, that said, if GeoNetwork already has a working solution for 64bit Windows, why not use it directly?
I guess it would also allow sharing some of the maintenance.
Cheers

Indeed, GeoNetwork already uses the JSL for the 64-bit Windows installer. There’s not too much code that can be shared when it comes to that part though.
It’s just a DLL and a minimal configuration file, if I recall correctly. But of course, we can reuse that for GeoServer as well.
The Apache Commons Daemon (ACD) you mentioned that Tomcat seems to be using does not seem to be much more advanced than the JSL, looking at this comparison chart:
http://yajsw.sourceforge.net/#mozTocId284533
So if there’s a need for a better wrapper than JSL, I believe we really should check out this YAJSW, as it seems the most robust (it basically is a re-implementation of the Tanuki wrapper).
At least both GeoNetwork and GeoServer would be able to profit from it now.

We use the 32-bit service in Windows, because there’s nothing else available (as we only host some WFS services, 32bit isn’t a problem).
But 64-bit only would also not be a problem as the OS itself is 64-bit…
We’ll just have to use a 64bit Java runtime instead of the 32-bit now
