[Geoserver-devel] Geotools, Geoserver and Coverages' future.

Ciao Adit,
I took a look at the project you are working and it seems pretty
interesting, moreover it fits with what are the objectives of the WCS
work we are trying to carry out on the GeoServer.

As of the GeoServer custom version that we are about to release, focus
was on efficiently managing two dimensional coverage improving the
implementation OGC GridCoverage implementation specification present
in GeoTools and adding support for such objects inside GeoServer both
via the WMS service (for rendering) as well as for the WCS service.
A lot of work has been carried out behind the scenes, in order to
evaluate the best approach for building the back end for handling
coherently coverage datasources. As you better than me know, coverages
can be strange beasts. If we want to efficiently manage them we need
to combine coherently various techniques like tiling, caching,
decimation, pyramids, etc... hence a good back end is needed
and for that matter we looked at the following libraries, JAI, ImageIO
and also Java Bindings for GDAL.
So to answer some of your questions, the actual version of GeoServer
we developed works mainly with 2d data.

Ok, now let's talk about plans and objectives.
Next spiral of development (meaning introducing new functionality) for
GeoTools and GeoServer is ND coverages based on the ISO 19123
specification.
As I said above a lot of preliminary work has been to come up with a
framework for managing the IO coherenty and the answer right now is
mostly JAI+ImageIO.
Moreover a lot of work has been carried out in other directions,
summarising there has been significant work on ISO 19108 (time
management) and ISO 1107 geometries which has been done by the guys at
the Fire Sciences Lab in he US (thanks Bryce, Alex and whoever is
there  ) plus it is worthwhile to mention the work that is about to
be merged on GeoTools trunk for the complex features management.

Clearly a lot has been done, but still a lot has to be done.
In my personal vision the steps should done as follows:

1a>Finish the implementation of ISO 19123 object for managing nD
coverage integrating work on time and geometries.
1b>Design and implement the framework for I/O which has been
completely left out of ISO 19123 hence we are pretty free to do
whatever we want.

This two task can be done almost in parallel.

2a>Integrate the objects for managing nD Coverages in geoserver WCS
This task might require quite some changes to the geoserver structure.

2b>Integrate the object for managing nD Coverage in geoserver WMS
This task includes some work on geotools rendering side for coverage
but it should not be terribly difficult.

Ok, now you know what has been done and what we would like to do. The
point is how we can proceed. The best thing would be doing an informal
IRC session someday next week and having all the interested parties
stating needs, objective, sustainable level of involvement and, last
but not least, availaible funding, because if someone come up with
money to work on this topics that would really help to get things done
quickly.

Hoping to spice up some discussion.
Simone.

But Geoserver is large and complex and we are not finding its inner workings

Geoserver is experimental and focused on 2-D images, rather than 4-D Data.

We also worried that the "2-D" assumption in Geoserver might be deep-rooted

that since GeoServer is heavily dependent on GeoTools, considerable effort
is need to extend GeoTools as well to cater for our needs.

We would basically like to know if there are any plans to have this feature

GeoServer.

Hello Simone,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

In the meantime, I have been looking at GeoServer and GeoTools over last few
days with the aim of extending the current WCS branch of GeoServer to handle
4D data from CF NetCDF files, in a limited timeframe.

This will possibly involve changing the structure of GeoServer by possibly
adding a new library for 4D data.

        GEOSERVER
                        / \
                       / \
                     GEOTOOLS NEW_LIBRARY (4D DATA)

This will also involve modifying some of the existing classes that specially
deal with returning coverages: coverageResponse,
coverageResponseDelegateFactory, CoverageResponseDelegate,
                                        DescribeResponse

This seems as the simplest way to me in the short term. It would retain the
current capabilities of Geoserver(based on GeoTools) but will be extended
for 4D data as well.

However it does deviate from what "your" objectives are. But do you think
this is a viable possibility.

Best Regards,

Adit

I think your approach differs substantially from our approach in
implementation details. However, I think we both need a common interface,
especially if we're both going to be hacking Geoserver. Hence, I think
there's significant opportunity for collaboration. Another potential
collaborator who has not yet been mentioned is Rob Atkinson. I believe
he's barking up this tree with the UK Met office right about now.

Interface questions:
+ what is the syntax to request a 2D slice of 4D data?
+ how will 4D extent be specified?
+ is there a spec for time strings coming from a WCS?
+ what is the behavior if a vertical slice is requested?

I think it even makes sense to use a "quick/short-term" solution to flesh
out the required interface while the long term solution is under
development.

So, yeah, I think it's viable.

From a naive perspective, that's about what I figured too. The data side you guys are doing is a bit hacky from the long term perspective, but the GeoServer interface should be the same, and your work would hopefully re-work what we've got to handle the next steps. So I'd say take care on the geoserver side of things, abstract out your data access and make sure that the actual WCS layer continues to work with the current 2D stuff as well as yours.

So, yeah, I think it's viable.

Hello all,

We developed a Web Service application called GADS:

http://www.resc.rdg.ac.uk/twiki/bin/view/Resc/GridAccessDataService

It basically provides a simple interface for downloading gridded geospatial
data. However, GADS does not depend on any specification, hence the plan to
make it WCS compliant.

In certain respects, the requests format will be similar to those provided
by the TPAC/NDG project, which extends the spec slightly for full four-d
subsetting across arbitrary dimensions:

http://glue.badc.rl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/TPAC/WCS

However, we wish to augment the spec to make provision for downloading large
(several hundreds MB) data asynchronously.

Cheers,

Adit

would you be able to do an informat IRC tomorrow afternoon (our time

That would cut help the discussion even because some people (like me)
