Hi list,
I am sending this email to inform/warn you about the GeoTools
gridcoverages backport to 2.3.x that I am going to perform.
<<Background>>
I am constantly working on what I call stable development of the
GridCoverage modules and plugins of GeoTools, mainly for supporting
GeoServer raster branch. Definition of stable is no API shift, solely
bug fixes, minor enhancements and new plugins respecting the old
interfaces.
<<The Issue>>
We need to have the raster GeoServer to profit the stable development
I am doing on GeoTools as well as all the other bug fixes from other
modules. It is imperative for me and Alessio to be able to deploy our
version of GeoServer with a short notice without too many concerns,
hence we have to assume that, while we do stable development on
gridcoverages, the remaining part of geotools does not change too
much.
<<The deal>>
The agreement we found with the two communities involved,
GeoTools/GeoServer, is as follows:
-Keep on doing stable development on 2.3.x
-Backport the (few) changes made on 2.4.x to 2.3.x trying to not
cause problems to other people.
-Do RnD on 2.4.x.
<<Conclusion>>
Following Jody's suggestion (thanks man for all your help), I have
already moved things that were under spike on 2.4.x to
ext/coverage_development of 2.3.x. They are out of the build hence
they will not affect anybody. I will keep on doing my plugins and
tools development under this directory, out of the build and of the
release in order to not bother anyone else. When things will be ready
I will ask the permission to move them under the appropriate dir and I
will add them to the build.
However, there is one thing missing, before we can do a new release of
geoserver raster and start working on 2.3.x. I need to backport the
changes I have made on the coverage plugins, and the coverages
packages (which are very few).
This might cause some glitches (I am sure they won't but I prefer to
be pessimistic and then say everything was fine than the opposite)
hence I would like to see people (Adrian?) exposing their concerns.
Be aware that GeoTools 2.3.x is going soon to be the base for next
generations of uDig and GeoServer hence all the work I am doing will
be soon exploited by them (hopefully ).
Thanks you all,
Simone.
