I am ready to go with a version number change for GeoTools[1]. This will require making a change to the GeoServer pom.xml in order to track that latest GeoTools snapshot.
Okay the change went ahead smoothly on the GeoTools side. The docs even show version 8.

Changing my local builder over to 8-SNAPSHOT worked; pushing the commit up to see what hudson makes of it.

The build succeeded. Manual inspection of geoserver.war WEB-INF/lib showed gt-*-8-SNAPSHOT artifacts and no from 2.8-SNAPSHOT. mvn dependency:tree in web/app also showed only gt-*-8-SNAPSHOT artifacts (no third-party dependencies that depend on 2.8.x).
Thanks!
Kind regards,
Ben.
