Here's one that looks at little less hard coded (I dont know if it is):

UEST=GetCapabilities

To do a good job of auto-generating could be difficult since not
everyone will have the same "taste" for the result.
Ok, we lack enough flexibility on the sld spec as to pass font attributes to
use on the legend graphic.
I imagine adding this functionality and then provide some configuration
options on the ui, as to switch between with/withour style names, and
configure the font to use.
But, you're right,
it wouldnt be that difficult to make it better by adding in
meta-information about the little icons (from the title/abstract) and a
bit about the text labeling. What do you do for multiple symbolizers
in a rule?
multiple symbolizers in a rule apply as a whole (like in the road with center
line example), so they share a single slot on the legend stack (correct me if
I'm wrong)
in all cases, the easy (and most appropriate way, imho), is to use the rule
name as the legend text. It is simple and consistent. If you have a rule for
population lower than 1000, call it " < 1000" on the SLD and you'll get
exactly that on the legend.
does it makes sense for you?
People who want it to look better could use the auto-generated one as a
basis for making a custom-made one in "photoshop".
