Hi,
as anticipated during the last meetings, and also by an older thread in this mailing list this year,
here is a GSIP to allow admin and users to dismiss (cancel) process executions:

WPS2.0 section is empty (you covered it in the sections above).

The heart beat seems a bit odd, no need to poll if no processes need to be cancelled.

The heartbeat thing is necessary to cancel the future in a thread pool
waiting to execute a process, due to other processes keeping busy the pool.
Since we cancel in a node, and the future is scheduled for execution in
another,
we need that node to periodically check the status storage for cancellation
to
ensure we don't even start executing, and thus don't waste valuable
resources:
the inputs are already parsed and locked in memory at that point, we want
to get
rid of them as soon as possible if the user or the admin decided to cancel
that
queued process.
And this would be an extra duty for the heartbeat timer.

The existing function of the hearbeat in clustering instead is to let the
other
nodes know that a certain process, that might not be issuing progress
via the listener, is actually still running, and thus its input and output
resources are still needed and should not be removed: input files, the
request
that we might need to encode the output when ancestry is required, whatever
other file system bit the process allocated to do its work.

This is required to tell the difference between a running but silent
process,
and a process that started, and then had its WPS node killed by a software,
/hardware failure or just killed -9 by the admin, and thus it's actually no
longer
running: the file system resources linked to that process need to be cleared
instead, and we know it's not running anymore because its hearbeat timer
is not updating the last modified field anymore.
