[Geoserver-devel] GSIP 129 Developers Guide Refresh

Proposal is ready for review and voting:

- GSIP 129 - Dev Guide Refresh

The proposal is covering a number of topics (since our developers guide covers a number of topics).

The three requiring approval from the PSC list are:

  • removing the section on roadmap planning
  • adding a section on responsible disclosure
  • adjusting release schedule (for July beta, August RC1 (and code freeze), September release)
  • Clarification on our expectations for submitting fixes to master / stable / maintenance

You are encouraged to read and revise the above link as I will be using the wording their as the basis for editing the developers guide.

+1. Thanks very much Jody. Great work.

My one suggestion relates to backporting fixes to stable and maintenance. In my view, you are correct to note that failing to backport fixes makes these branches redundant, but then so does immediately backporting all changes as this makes the branches identical.

I know of several instances in which developers immediately backported fixes that broke all three branches, sometimes without even building on non-master branches. My understanding is that stable and maintenance are meant to provide users with increasing insulation from change, and I think these call for a bit more developer caution.

While simple or urgent fixes (e.g. vulnerabilities, null checks, some one liners) can or even must be backported immediately, I encourage developers to prove their less urgent or more complex fixes on master for a few days to a week before backporting. Can we include something to this effect in the guide?

Kind regards,
Ben.

Thanks for the discussion Ben / Simone.

For this proposal I am just trying to capture our intent as a steering committee. We can either sort out the exact language now in the proposal or in the subsequent pull requests.

Still if you are content with the direction of this GSIP please vote +1. I will try and make seperate pull requests for each topic so we can keep conversations distinct.

Ciao Jody,
simply put when doing a fix:

- one must investigate if a backport is needed/ca be done
- one must capture this investigation in the JIRA and/or PR
- actual backport is optional (at least for the time being).

Long story short, I do expect people to bother and make sure a
backport can be done.
This should be captured preferably in JIRA. If they also the actual
backport even better.

That said, my +1 is already there.
