[Geoserver-devel] GSIP 130 - Layer Group Scale Ranges

GSIP 130 - Layer Group Scale Ranges

https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/wiki/GSIP-130

Extend the LayerGroupInfo interface and its implementations to store a
range of scales for each layer the same way as is done for style.

I brought this up at a PSC meeting a few weeks ago.

Thanks Kevin, the approach you describe is actually a “best practice” for changing between generalized datasets within a layer group. After your change the layers would be able to use the same style which is nice.

No objection, but I would not call that a "best practice", it's cleaner to
use the pre-generalized store and hide the fact there are the different
data sets behind
a single layer (assuming the meaning of the features did not change, but
just their representation).

Agreed about pregeneralized store it would be nice to make a UI for that one.

I can certainly see the value in this - it is a common one for use where we have geological maps at 1:50,000, 1:250,000, and 1:1,000,000.The generalization that goes on between scales is not trivial and certainly not automatic. It would be nice to have them in one service. I am interested in the Andrea's comments about a pre-generalized store. Can this be elaborated please? I assume this is something that wouldnt work of pretty dynamic layers?

Gere is the link: http://docs.geotools.org/latest/userguide/library/data/pregeneralized.html

You can configure it to swap between tables (or between geometry columns) based on scale. Swapping between tables is nice as when zoomed out you can use a smaller dataset. But even swapping between geometry columns is useful as you can use geometry with less points speeding everthing up.

The SLD does not know what is going on; it just gets different sets of geometry to draw.

It works great, something to keep in mind the next time you do performance optimization for GeoServer.

Thanks Jody. I hadnt seen that plugin and I can certainly use it for switching between tables. (For the geology case, smaller polygons are eliminated as scale increases).

What about case where detailed geometry exists for some geometry but all? ie, I would like logic like " geom = (geom_20!=null)?geom_20:geom_50"

+1.

One question: does it matter that your layers+visibleScales example uses semicolon to separate list items, and not comma as for other KVP parameters such as "bbox"? Everywhere else I see "layers" with a comma. I see that some other vendor parameters are documented as using semicolon.

Kind regards,
Ben.
