[Geoserver-devel] GSIP-167 Log4j Update

I double checked what was needed for log4j update, and updated the proposal to reflect log4 2 ability to load log4 1 configuration files: https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/wiki/GSIP-167

While I am not sure I have capacity I hope the research is useful.

I will attach a quote for 5k to the above page; suggest remaining funds go to cite code sprint.

I was hoping to see a comparison with logback somewhere but… time is of the essence and
the 2.21-RC release date is getting close fast.

Thanks for responding Andrea, I set the quote to expire mid month (… keeping that timeline in mind.)

I found a comparison here http://www.java-logging.com/comparison/

  • Log4j had one more level: “FATAL” (would love to see GeoServer use a STATUS logging level, one notch below INFO)
  • Not many functional differences between log4j and logback…
  • Log4j can log objects and arrays
  • Log4j has a graphic application
  • log4j live monitoring by network or pipes <— oh look the feature that got them in trouble
  • logback has commercial support

GSIP-167 did not pass.

So this proposal was not approved before the attached quite expired on Feb 11th.

Please advise what you would like to do next.

By the comparison http://www.java-logging.com/comparison/ I would have liked to see also a proposal for logback that by the feature table seems to be on the same line with log4j, but we do not have such proposal.

The Feb 11th deadline (on the quote) was only so this activity could start this week and not delay the 2.21-RC release.

I am going to leave the proposal open for voting; and we can check in during tomorrow’s PSC meeting.

Aside: I have nothing against logback, it is just not the proposal I researched how to perform.

  • initial: 75% of funds raised to a maximum of €5000 Feb 11, to allow time to complete upgrade for 2.21-RC

  • updated: 75% of funds raised to a maximum of €5000 Feb 18, may delay 2.21-RC

Just to confirm the proposal has been accepted and I have availability to work on this next week. The release candidate may be delayed, but it will be great to have this done!
