[Geoserver-devel] GSP 115 - VirtualCoverage

Hi guys,

I have setup a proposal about VirtualCoverage:
http://rancor.boundlessgeo.com:8080/display/GEOS/GSIP+115±+VirtualCoverage

In summary, it consists on allowing to configure a “VirtualCoverage” built on top of different coverages from a store. The resulting coverage exposes input coverages as different bands.

This will be similar to what is achieved with SQL Views on vector stores.

More details are available in the proposal.

Cheers,
Daniele

Proposal details look fine, was trying to think of an alternative name to “Virtual” but am coming up blank. I just feel that every time I use “virtual coverage” in a sentence I would have to explain what it means.

Sythetic? Reorganized? Projected? Computed?

Hi Jody,
about the name, we initially thought about “Virtual Coverage” since we got inspired by GDAL “Virtual Raster”.
That’s not the very same thing, but with a “Virtual Raster” you may define a new Raster built on top of other Rasters, by defining some properties to customize how to use them.

So this is why we called that “Virtual Coverage”.

I sort of like composite, but if and when we add raster algebra to it,
composite won't fit anymore what the code does

Well, when I saw the name “Virtual Coverage” I immediately thought “cool - it’s pulling data from that GDAL format, that might be useful”. But this apparently isn’t that. Others may have the same thought process, so I’m with those who suggest an alternate name; it’d help differentiate it. The “CompositeCoverage” suggestion is a good one.

Hi guys,
back on the “naming” topic so in the next days I’ll prepare a pull request with the definitive set of classes (VirtualCoverageXX? CompositeCoverageXX? ComputedCoverageXX?..).

I saw several people are against Virtual due to the misleading reference to GDAL integration (although Virtual as been originally inspired to the GDAL Virtual Raster capability to setup a Raster on top of other ones).
Let’s do a poll…

Please express your preference between

  • virtual (a “virtual” coverage made of other bands as GDAL Virtual raster is made of other rasters)
  • composite (a coverage been composed of other bands as simple selections or more complex combinations as per future improvements)
  • computed (a coverage having bands being computed on top of other bands, where the computation may be a simple selection as well as a more complex math as per future improvements).

Please, let us know.
Best Regards,
Daniele

Cheers,
Daniele

about the name, we initially thought about “Virtual Coverage” since we got inspired by GDAL “Virtual Raster”.
That’s not the very same thing, but with a “Virtual Raster” you may define a new Raster built on top of other Rasters, by defining some properties to customize how to use them.

So this is why we called that “Virtual Coverage”.

Cheers,
Jonathan

- virtual (a "virtual" coverage made of other bands as GDAL Virtual raster

- composite (a coverage been composed of other bands as simple selections

- computed (a coverage having bands being computed on top of other bands,
where the computation may be a simple selection as well as a more complex
math as per future improvements).

I still like virtual better, composite is wrong long term, computed makes
me think only about
doing actual calculations.

If we want to draw a parallel, this functionality is the equivalent of sql
view for vector data,
so we could also call them "coverage views"

CoverageView would answer my original feedback " just feel that every time I use “virtual coverage” in a sentence I would have to explain what it means."

+1 as well as here, especially thinking about the next things we aim
to add to this functionalities (in-place raster algebra and so on).
